Our main tour of the historic Silver City downtown district is arranged by appointment and takes 90 minutes. It covers about a mile of mostly level ground, with a few steps and high curbs. This tour can be customized by request to be shorter, or to emphasize specific aspects of Silver City such as its art, architecture, or history.
The tour begins at the so-called "Billy the Kid" cabin, a replica of an Old West home built by a movie company in 2003. From here, at the corner of Broadway and Hudson, we head west along Broadway to Bullard. This intersection is the heart of old Silver City and many of its finest 19th-century commercial buildings can be seen from here.
At the corner of Broadway and Arizona the tour turns north for one block, then east on Yankie into the main arts district, admiring galleries near the crossing of Yankie and Texas.
When Yankie enters Bullard we head north again, passing along a line of impressive buildings whose businesses have served residents for well over a century. Two of the last grand houses, the Cohen and Warren residences, are along this route as well.
At Market Street the tour turns east and crosses the "Big Ditch" over a footbridge that provides an excellent view of Silver City's lush downtown park. The bridge emerges at the parking lot of the Silver City-Grant County Visitors Center, completing a loop.
Other tours include visits to La Capilla (the tiny chapel overlooking downtown), Chihuahua Hill (settled by Mexican miners), Western New Mexico University (northwest of downtown), Silver City Museum (with an excellent gallery and gift shop), and Boston Hill (where silver was first discovered in 1870).
